Special Correspondent: The 'Team-191' of the students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology from Bangladesh has secured the silver rank in the International 'University Physics Competition-2020'. This information was confirmed on Monday (January 18) by a member of 'Team-191' and a student of the 2017-18 session of the Physics Department, Md Tashin Ahammad.
The other members of the team are T.A.M Ragib Shahriar, a student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department for 2017-18 session and Tahmidul Azom Sany, a student of Physics Department for 2017-18 session.
The University Physics
Competition is an international contest for undergraduate students, who
work in teams of three at their home colleges and universities all over
the world, and spend a weekend in November, 48 hours, analyzing a
real-world scenario using the principles of physics, and writing a
formal paper describing their work.
About the competition. Md Tashin Ahammad said that, "The competition, organized by the International University Physics Committee, started at 8 am on November 8 last year. There were two problems in the competition, from there any problem has to be solved and a paper has to be prepared and submitted within 48 hours. Led by Team Supervisor Jaseer Ahmed, we submitted a paper on solving the problem of sending rockets to Saturn. And according to the results published today, we achieve the silver rank."
Their problem was to solve; Ion Thrusters to Saturn. It is about a spacecraft is in a circular orbit around the Earth, with an orbital period of 90 minutes. The spacecraft has a total mass of 5,000 kg, including fuel. The spacecraft is equipped with ion thrusters that can provide a constant thrust of 400 millinewtons, with a specific impulse of 4,000 seconds. Our goal is to place the spacecraft into a circular orbit around Saturn, with an orbital period of 40 hours. What is the minimum amount of fuel this will take? What will be the duration of the trip? How should the thrusters be controlled during the journey?
Congratulating "Team-191" on winning the competition, Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed said, "Our boys have been participating in various international competitions and winning various events to bring honor to the country. ‘Team-191’ sincerely thanks for continuing this process. Our next participants will also be encouraged by them. Besides, we have always been cooperating with the participants in such competitions. And in the case of such competitors, our cooperation will continue."
